How Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum was detained over excess cash in Spain
The mother of Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dolores Aveiro was stopped at Madrid’s Barajas Airport last month over charges of money laundering.
According to The Telegraph, 60-year-old Aveiro was held by border police at Barajas after it was discovered she had a total of €55,000 (£40,000) in her hand luggage.
In Spain, the maximum amount travellers are permitted to carry with them without declaring a transfer is €10,000 and Aveiro had not filled out a declaration form. Other reports say she was held by civil guard agents at the airport for a few minutes while the excess cash was confiscated before she was eventually allowed to fly to Portugal with €10,000 of the total amount.
The superstar’s mother will now be fined at least €600 for attempting to illegally export cash and the confiscated €45,000 can only be released to her after paying the fine, although the incident is not viewed as a crime but an administrative offence.
