China's Great Wall 'is disappearing'

Image
Beijing (AFP) - Around 30 percent of China's Ming-era Great Wall has disappeared over time as adverse natural conditions and reckless human activities -- including stealing the bricks to build houses -- erode the UNESCO World Heritage site, state media reported. The Great Wall is not a single unbroken structure but stretches for thousands of kilometres in sections, from Shanhaiguan on the east coast to Jiayuguan in the windswept sands on the edge of the Gobi desert. In places it is so dilapidated that estimates of its total length vary from 9,000 to 21,000 kilometres (5,600 to 13,000 miles), depending on whether missing sections are included. Despite its length it is not, as is sometimes claimed, visible from space. Construction first begun in the third century BC, but nearly 6,300 kilometres were built in the Ming Dynasty of 1368-1644, including the much-visited sectors north of the capital Beijing. Of that, 1,962 kilometres has melted away over the centuries, the Beijing

The real reason why the Supreme Court’s Obamacare ruling is so important

Image
The Supreme Court handed the Obama administration a significant victory on Thursday, when it upheld a key provisionof the Affordable Care Act that allows the federal government to keep distributing subsidies to help low-income Americans buy health insurance. But the decision's ramifications go far beyond an immediate win for President Barack Obama and the law. The Supreme Court's ruling firmly entrenches the Affordable Care Act as the law of the land, leaving no room for a theoretical future Republican president to undo major pillars of the law in an executive fashion. "The decision leaves no wiggle room for a future Administration that might have wanted to end the ACA’s subsidies," Larry Levitt, senior vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation, told Business Insider after the ruling. That's because the Supreme Court not only ruled the federal subsidies are legal under the Affordable Care Act, but it also did not leave any ambiguity that would allow

Being able to give your parents expensive gifts like this at such a young age is quite impressive. Rita Ora's lucky mum and dad - Vera and Besnik – have been given the keys to her £1.3 million house in North London. The 24-year-old star revealed she decided to hand them over because she doesn't have the time to spend in the six-bedroom mansion. Rita told Free Radio: "I think I've ended up giving the house to my parents, actually. They need it more than me. I'm never really in one place. I'm back to square one but at least my parents have a place." It’s not the first time a pop star has given their parents a house – in fact it’s a bit of thing. Zayn Malik famously got his mum a place a couple of years ago, Liam Payne also got his parents a pad, as has Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato. In Nigeria, we have Reekado Banks, Linda Ikeji and I'm sure some readers here too. Moral of the story: Hustle real hard! God will mightily bless you and the wor

Australian fishermen lure rare monster shark

Image
Melbourne (AFP) - Fishermen off Australia who accidentally caught a whopping 6.3 metre basking shark have provided scientists with a rare opportunity to study the second-biggest fish on the planet. Little is known about the species -- smaller only than the whale shark -- because it does not need to surface for air to survive and so is not often spotted. The specimen has been donated to Museum Victoria, in the southern city of Melbourne, whose scientists will use its tissue samples, stomach contents and vertebrae to research its genetics, diet and life history. The head and fins will also be used to build a full-scale exhibition model of the animal, which is rated vulnerable to overfishing, the museum said in a statement. "These rare encounters can provide many of the missing pieces of knowledge that help broader conservation and biological research," said the museum's senior curator of ichthyology, Martin Gomon. Basking sharks are slow-moving plankton feeders whic
