Luxembourg’s Prime Minister marries gay lover
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, 42 has become the second world leader to wed a same-sex partner with his marriage to Gauthier Destenay, a Belgian architect.
It was the first gay marriage since the country became the latest EU state to extend full rights to same-sex couples and the ceremony took place in the mostly Catholic Grand Duchy.
The marriage, announced on Monday, May 11, 2015, came five years after Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, the then prime minister of Iceland, became the first serving leader in the world to marry a same-sex partner.
Xavier Bettel succeeded Jean-Claude Juncker as the Prime Minister of Luxembourg on Wednesday, December 4, 2013.
